FOLL-0017Certain types of biological malfunctions may have an effect over the growth cycle of the hair follicle and will lead to premature hair loss (alopecia). They may be hormone-related (androgynous alopecia) or caused by an autoimmune disorder (alopecia areata). Alopecia areata is characterized by the initiation of an autoimmune reaction against the intrafollicular part of the hair follicle during the anagen phase of the growth cycle. This reaction is linked to the infiltration of T lymphocytes and the release of primarily Th2/Th22 cytokines, as in atopic dermatitis. This inflammatory reaction induces gene expression modulation and causes reduction of hair growth and then a premature entry into the telogen phase, thus preventing regrowth once the follicle has been shed. This in vitro assay consists in evaluating, via RT-qPCR and in micro dissected human hair follicles, the effect of compounds on a panel of genes modulated by alopecic inflammation (inflammation, extracellular matrix, proteases).
